Samantha Lyn Aasen
Samantha Lyn Aasen makes work that regularly questions how female relationships and societal standards about sexuality function in culture at large. Toward this end, she uses her art practice as an exploration of how desire and repulsion are embedded in the experiences of girlhood and consumer culture. Her different series and personas demonstrate how the body is commodified, appropriated and distributed across a number of different media, only Aasen heightens these contradictions by pointing to the super imposition of fantasy and form.
Aasen has had exhibitions in Indiana, Arizona, Illinois, Nebraska, Maryland, and the UK. She holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Art in Photography from Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University and an MFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Intermedia from Arizona State University. Recently she attended the Feminist Artist Conference Residency in Toronto, Canada and she currently teaches at Phoenix College along with being a long-time volunteer and supporter of Girls Rock! Phoenix.
